The Poitiers Faculty of Law was founded in 1431 and is therefore one of the oldest Law Faculties in France. Its reputation is based on the ongoing presence of renowned professors in the fields of Private Law, Public Law, History of Law and Political Science such as Allard, Boncenne, Bourbeau, Ducroq, Foucard, Lepetit and also Carbonnier, Cornu, Savatier, Vedel, Voin and Waline.
It can also be proud of former students such as Tiraqueau, Rabelais, du Bellay, Ronsard, Bacon, Viète and Descartes, to name just a few.
Today, the Faculty of Law is still one of the University of Poitiers’ most dynamic faculties with over 3000 students, 100 teaching staff members and 5 research teams.
The Poitiers Faculty of Law and Social Sciences has an important international dimension, having signed agreements with foreign universities and organizations across Europe and around the world. Its international network relies on more than 20 cooperation agreements with universities outside Europe, and 50 institutional Erasmus + contracts.
These international agreements allow student exchanges as well as academic and administrative staff exchanges. They are also at the basis of the numerous conferences organised each year in cooperation with fellow research teams, all the while encouraging the emergence of new research projects and double degree programmes.
The Poitiers Faculty of Law offers 5 double degree programmes with foreign universities inside and outside of Europe.
These double degrees allow students to undertake part of their studies in a foreign university thereby learning to master two different legal cultures. In the 5 programmes, students validate a French National Master’s degree as well as a Master’s degree in the partner university.

Every year the Poitiers Faculty of Law greets foreign professors from partner universities who come teach during several weeks to introduce our students to foreign legal cultures. These professors also contribute to the activity of our research teams.
The Poitiers Faculty of Law has 5 research teams which are all involved in numerous international collaborations with foreign Law Faculties, some having led to the development of double degree programmes or cotutelle agreements.
CECOJI research team is specialised in interdisciplinary research fields such as Human rights, Public International Law, Intellectual Property Law, Digital Law, Data protection Law, Legal linguistics, Rural Law, Social Law and Political Science.
Its main international partners are Cambridge University, the Moscow Academy of Law, LSU Law, the OAPI (Office Africain de la Propriété Intellectuelle), United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTD) and the University of Bucarest. The CECOJI Research team also works with partners in Japan, Canada, Spain, Vietnam and has a very important network in Sub-Saharan Africa (Togo, Cameroun, Côte d’Ivoire…).
ISCRIM’ research team is specialized in Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure, International and European Criminal Law, Traffic Law, Criminal Policy and Criminology.
Its main international partners are l’Université Louvain la Neuve, University of Messina, University of Ljubljana, Hokkaido University, UCA –Universidad Catolica Argentina.
ERDP research team is specialised in Comparative Contract Law, Contractualisation and new contractual models, Consumer Law and Tort Law.
Its main international partners are the University of Bucarest, the University of Djibouti, Université Laval, Université Louvain la Neuve, Université de Genève, University of Münster, Roma Tre University, University of Santiago de Compostela, Université Saint-Esprit de Kaslik (USEK), University of Warsaw. The ERDP Research team is also a member of the GRECA network (Groupe de Recherche Européen sur la Responsabilité Civile et l’Assurance).
IDP research team is specialised in Administrative Act Theory, Administrative Contract Law, Administrative Proceedings, Constitutional Law, European Union Law, Public Finances, Public Service Law and Public Domain Law.
It has close ties with Columbia, especially with the following 4 universities : Universidad Libre de Bogota, Pontificia Universidad Javeriana de Bogota, Universidad del Norte à Barranquilla et Universidad Industrial de Santander à Bucaramanga. IDP Research Team also has strong ties with universities in Japan (especially Kobe university) and regularly organises seminars on Franco-Japanese Comparative Law.
IHD research Team is specialised in History of Law and more particularly in the following themes : confrontation of legal systems and instauration of legal orders, birth and development of the contemporary French legal system, legal hybridisation in colonial and post-colonial situations.
Its main international partners are Roma Tre University (Jean Beauchard – Paolo Maria Vecchi annual Workshops) and University of Ljubljana.

Launched in 2015 with a first edition dedicated to “Property”, the Faculty of Law Summer School takes place every year at the end of June or at the beginning of July. This event greatly involves our Faculty’s international network. It is an opportunity to greet teaching staff members from partner universities (Slovania, Italy, Canada, Germany…), and also Master and Doctoral Students from abroad, who can earn ECTS credits by participating in the lectures.
Students from partner universities are eligible for a student exchange within our faculty. In order to come for one semester or a full academic year, students must have been selected by their home university beforehand.

Nomination deadline for 1st semester/full year mobilities: May 15th.
Nomination deadline for 2nd semester mobilities: October 30th.
After their nomination, students will receive information by email concerning enrolment procedures and all other procedures related to their stay in Poitiers (accommodation, health insurance, etc.).
Exchange students can follow all 1st year (L1) to 4th year (M1) courses, and a few 5th year courses from the Political Science Master programme. All the classes are taught exclusively in French, except for 6 Political Science courses that are taught in English.

The « Cours Magistraux – CM » are lecture-type courses of 20 to 30 hours per semester (in general 3 hours per week). Some CMs are associated to a “Travaux Dirigés –TD” , which are optional for exchange students.
Exchange students who are enroled in a CM (without the associated TD), must pass a single oral exam at the end of the semester.
The “Travaux Dirigés – TD” are tutorial-type courses linked to certain CMs. They are spread throughout the semester into approximately 10 sessions of 1h30 per week. TDs are optional for exchange students. The session topic is given a week in advance and focuses on a specific point that was discussed in the CM. Students must prepare each session according to the teacher’s instructions (library research, lectures, oral presentations).
Exchange students who are enrolled in a course with TDs obtain a grade for the work provided during sessions. They also obtain grades for the mid-term and final written exams, called “pré-colle” and “colle”. They must not submit to an oral exam.
Learning assessment can be achieved through written and oral exams.
Oral exams (for courses followed without TDs) last about 20 minutes. The professor hands out a topic and the student has 10 minutes to prepare and 10 minutes to answer the question.
Written exams (for courses with TDs) last 3 to 4 hours.
If a student fails an oral exam, he or she can present him/herself to a second session, called “rattrapage”.
Students who are absent during an exam obtain 0/20.
All exam dates are determined exclusively by the Professor in charge of the course and the international relations office. Students must ensure their presence until the end of the exam period and organize the return trip to their home country accordingly.

The Poitiers Faculty of Law proposes a specific university diploma for exchange students in order to offer a certain recognition of their studies in Poitiers. Students who wish to obtain a diploma must choose courses within a specific list of courses, including one course with TDs. If students pass all the courses successfully, they are granted the “Certificat de Droit français” diploma. This diploma is accessible to exchange students studying in Poitiers for a full academic year. Students much choose between the Public Law track and the Private Law track.
The Centre de Français Langue Etrangère (CFLE) offers French lessons for international students who wish to improve their French during their stay in Poitiers.
